Some officials from the Southwest State of Somalia shared claims on social media alleging that aircraft belonging to the Government of Türkiye carried out attacks against the administration.
Among those who shared these claims was the Speaker of the Southwest State Parliament, Ali Said Faqi, who posted the statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account. The claims were also circulated by several local media outlets.
Verification
Following the emergence of these claims, Somali Fact Check conducted an investigation to verify the information and assess whether there was any evidence supporting the accusations made by the Southwest State administration against Türkiye.
Investigations conducted with officials from the Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu, officers from the Somali National Army, and independent local residents confirmed that no Turkish drones or aircraft targeted facilities belonging to the Southwest State administration or civilians in the region.
The Somali Ministry of Defence also announced that the Somali National Army, in coordination with international partners, had carried out operations targeting Al-Shabaab militants in the outskirts of Daynuunay.
All senior officials of the Southwest State are based in Baidoa, and after a thorough investigation, SomaliFactCheck.org confirmed that no attacks were carried out against government facilities or civilians by drone aircraft.
